Chinese Black Pottery is a revived art from thousands of years ago. These delicately crafted pieces are first hand-molded on the wheel from a special mud, then decorated with small tools by artists. The distinct feature is the luster which is obtained by rubbing the surface with sea shells while the piece is still semi-wet. The surface features are not done by glazing, but rather by "carved-in" patterns. The pieces are then put in slow, coal burning kilns for curing. Because no glazing has been applied, the pieces are not waterproof but are admired for it's luster and surface decorations.
